Primal Scream, won the inaugural Prize with the legendary album 'Screamadelica', holding off competition from among others, fellow Scots, the Jesus and Mary Chain shortlisted for their album, 'Honey's Dead'. Beatles producer Sir George Martin was on hand to present the artists with their shortlist trophy. Also honoured on the shortlist were two musicians with uniquely distinct visions, Barry Adamson, formerly of Magazine, and Jah Wobble, the great bassist from Public Image Ltd. U2 and Simply Red produced two of the albums that soundtracked the year: 'Achtung Baby' and 'Stars', respectively.
