Shortlisted for The Protecting Veil in the 1992 Mercury Music Prize, John Tavener continues to show an originality of concept that marks his musical vision as quite separate from those of his contemporaries. Svyati - which was commissioned by cellist Steven Isserlis - embraces Tavener's serenely mystical strands and the dark atmospheric possibilities inherent within both the cello and Russian choirs.
