1993

Suede triumphed with their memorable eponymous debut. A major achievement in a year when the likes of the Auteurs and the Stereo MCs were also honoured for their great debut albums. Sting with his album 'Ten Summoner's Tales' and the acclaimed pianist Stan Tracey for 'Portraits Plus' were both shortlisted and performed together at the show. Manchester legends New Order were on hand to celebrate their album Republic, which featured one of the year's great singles, 'Regret'. One of the most distinctive albums on the shortlist was Gavin Bryars 'Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet', a work that has continued to be performed in concert halls round the world ever since its release.
